IP Estimator

The IP estimator allows you to run a quick, free IP scan across an internal LAN to identify live systems. This feature will give partners an estimate of the amount of IPs to be expected on an internal network where the Agent is located.

Fun facts

  • Using the IP Estimator will NOT count towards any IP balances.
  • It is harmless to run on a network.

Under the hood

This feature invokes a popular tool named Nmap installed on the vPentest Agent. It works by running a port scan against a list of systems and returning the number of systems containing opened ports.

The scan can take just a few minutes or a few hours, depending on the size of the network and other network traffic. The results will be emailed to you.

Requirements

An internal Agent must be present and registered within the portal for this feature to work.

How it works

There are two methods to use the feature:

  1. Log in to vPentest and navigate to any of the pages below and click Launch IP Estimator.
    • Dashboard > Scheduled Assessments
    • Company Profile > Assessment tab
    • Schedule Assessment
  2. From the pop-up modal, provide the following:
    • Company Name: The company name should already be pre-selected.
    • Internal Agent: Select the registered Agent for the company.
    • IP Addresses: Provide the IPs and/or ranges that you would like to run the scan on.
    • Recipients: Select the recipients that should receive an email containing the final results.
  1. Launch the vPenTest Menu by logging into the terminal as root, or by typing vpt from the command-line interface.
  2. Select option 4 for IP Estimator
  3. Provide the IP addresses, ranges, or a text file containing IPs and/or ranges to the menu prompt.
